THE NOVEMBER 8 WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL. WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR THE NOVEMBER 8 WORKSHOP.
ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR THE NOVEMBER 1 WORKSHOP IS NOW CLOSED.
For Students
The Young Writers’ Workshops are one-day workshops where students get to choose the sessions they would like to attend. The staff welcomes interested students and motivated writers in grades 5-12. Classes are run by NVWP Teacher/Consultants, some of the best teachers in Northern Virginia. Classes are small, with an average ratio of twelve students to one Teacher/Consultant. The cost of the workshop is $60.00.
This fall’s topics are:
- Art & Nature Writing
- Writing from Personal Experience
- Visualization
- Theater Sports
- Mystery Stories
- Science Fiction Stories
- Short Stories
- Fantasy Stories
- Scriptwriting
- Poetry
- Dialogue & Characterization
- College Application Essay Writing (open to grades 10-12 ONLY)
For Parents
Parents are invited to attend a discussion on writing as a family. This discussion is free of charge and will take place from 11:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both dates. There is no need to notify us in advance if you wish to attend this discussion.
Paid Parents’ Workshop
In addition, we are offering parents the opportunity to participate in a writing workshop. On November 1, the topic will be Poetry. On November 8, the topic will be Family Stories. The Parents’ Workshop takes place from 10:20 a.m. to 11:40 a.m., and costs $20.00.
Please Note:
The deadline for registering for the Fall 2008 Young Writers’ Workshops is October 19. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The workshops invariably fill up well in advance of the registration deadline, so get yours in early.
Because space is limited and demand is high, we ask that you register for only one date. Registrations for more than one date will not be accepted; we will ask you to choose just one.
If you are registering more than one student, you must complete a separate registration for each one.
To Register
You may register online or through the mail.
Click here to download a printable registration form (PDF format). Please be sure to include your check, as a form alone does not reserve a space in the workshop.
Click here to register online. Please note that online registrations are not refundable. If your student is unable to attend, we will make every effort to schedule him or her into a later workshop. Please note: clicking this link will take you to the registration page, but you will not be able to register until August 25.
If you have further questions, please call the Project office at (703) 993-1168, or email us at youngwriters@NVWP.org.

Is the November 8 workshop full now?
October 7th, 2008 at 5:45 am
Yes, we do have a waiting list. However, there are already several students on it, and it is unlikely that we will have enough cancellations to accommodate all of them.
October 7th, 2008 at 5:46 am
Yes, I’m afraid the November 8 workshop is full. There is still a small amount of space left in the November 1 workshop.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project holds five Young Writers’ Workshops each academic year: two in the fall, and three in the spring. We do not have the exact dates for the Spring 2009 workshops yet, but it will likely be one Saturday in February, one in March, and one in April. Registration forms will go out in late December or early January.

NVWP workshops used to be offered to 4th graders. Now I see they are only for 5th grade and above. Is there anything available to 4th graders?

The fall Young Writers’ Workshops are open to 5th graders and above. The spring Young Writers’ Workshops are open to 4th graders and above.
