Northern Virginia Writing Project Teacher Consultant Karen Goldman has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Michelle Ohanian Award for New Leadership.  This award recognizes one NVWP Teacher Consultant each year who will be attending the National Writing Project Annual Meeting and who has shown outstanding leadership in the service of fellow Teacher Consultants.  This award carries with it a $500 stipend donated by Ms. Ohanian to support expenses incurred by attending the Annual Meeting.

In a letter to Ms. Goldmanm, NVWP Director Don Gallehr wrote, “You are the first recipient of this award, and as envisioned by Michelle, four others in the years ahead will follow.  It is most fitting that you are the first.”

Ms. Goldman is in her fourth year of teaching English at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in English from George Mason University.  She recently organized and led a one-day writing marathon in Leesburg, and is leading the NVWP Continuity Program.

Michelle Ohanian was named Teacher of the Year in 2008 by Fairfax County Public Schools, and shortly thereafter received the Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Award for Educational Excellence.  She is past chair of the National Writing Project’s English Language Learners Network, and currently serves as Coordinator of NVWP’s English Language Learners Program.
