History of the Summer Institute
For more than twenty years, the NVWP Summer Institute has been training teachers each summer to be Teacher Consultants. NVWP creates a ripple effect in improving the teaching of writing that moves across all disciplines and grade levels. At the Institute, teachers examine issues in the teaching of writing, present and demonstrate approaches to the teaching of writing, study current and past research in the field, and write in various modes and from different points of view, including a position paper on the teaching of writing.
Institute Details
Locations
The NVWP is holding its Summer Institute at George Mason University in Fairfax and Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown. Both institutes will be run exactly the same. All teachers may choose their site of preference, but we anticipate teachers west of Loudoun and Fauquier counties will prefer to attend at the Lord Fairfax site, and teachers east of Loudoun and Fauquier will come to George Mason. Teachers in Fauquier and Loudoun should select whichever site is more convenient for them.
Dates
The SI runs for one month in the summer, and Fellows attend from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Thursday evening seminars run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Every Fellow will be required to attend one session on a Friday morning (9:00 am - 1:00 pm) during the week in which that fellow presents.
Credits Earned
Fellows earn six graduate credits in either English or Education and 180 recertification points.
Cost
$1,810.00 (the cost of six hours of graduate tuition at George Mason University). Most schools and/or school districts pay full tuition. Fellows receive a small stipend ($400) for books and travel expenses, paid at the end of the seminar.
