Making the Power of Writing Available to All

Writing is essential today; the ability to write well opens doors to full participation in 21st century life.  Any working writer will attest that learning to write well is hard work, and requires access to tools, time, practice, and high quality instruction.  For over 30 years the Northern Virginia Writing Project has worked to improve writing instruction and practice at all educational levels.  The Teacher Consultants of the Northern Virginia Writing Project have inspired hundreds of thousands of students to take on the writer’s identity and to explore the power of writing. We are working to make the power of writing available to young people everywhere by fostering teacher development through intensive summer institutes, weekend workshops, courses, and through working directly with young writers and their families.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project does more than provides excellent instructional programs. We are a dynamic network of teacher leaders dedicated to continually improving our own writing practices and teaching lives.  In our work with other teachers and with student writers we demonstrate the power of writing as a tool for thinking, learning, and communicating with the world. Our goal is to make Writing Project professional development available to every teacher in Northern Virginia and to make Writing Project teachers available to every student.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project is grateful to the many parents, teachers, organizations, and individuals who have generously supported our work with teachers and students over the years.  Two NVWP programs in particular benefit from your support and investment:

Invitational Summer Institute

  • Your support helps pay the tuition for qualified and deserving teachers who have been accepted to participate in the NVWP Invitational Summer Institute (ISI), but whose school districts or school site does not provide their tuition funding.  In more and more cases, we find that the cost of tuition acts as a formidable barrier to teachers who wish to take part in the ISI. Your generosity can make the difference for a teacher wishing to take part in the ISI, but who could not without assistance.

Student Summer Institute

  • Young writers in Northern Virginia directly benefit from the generosity of our friends of the NVWP who help to cover the tuition cost for our two week Student Summer Institutes (SSI), which we offer each summer.  This nationally recognized program provides interested young writers with the opportunity deeply engage with the writing process in the company of like minded peers and expert teachers.  At this time we are actively seeking support for deserving students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Your contribution to the NVWP’s SSI outreach fund can make a big difference in the life of a young writer.
