One Day Workshops
Summer Writing Workshops Announced in the Shenandoah Valley June 28 and 29.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project in the Shenandoah Valley has scheduled two workshops this summer at Shenandoah University in Henkel Hall that offer a new experience for our young writers. This summer, students get to work with a published author in the morning and then attend genre sessions in the afternoon. The students get to choose from a list of genres for their afternoon session where they will work with teacher consultants of the NVWP. We welcome interested students and motivated writers in grades 5-12. Workshops run from 9am to 3pm.
The cost is $65.00 per day, or $130 for both days, which includes a book autographed by that day’s featured writer(s). The workshops are hosted by by NVWP Teacher Consultants, some of the best teachers in the Shenandoah Valley and Northern VA. Class size is small, with an average ratio of 10 students to one Teacher Consultant.
Registration deadline is Friday, June 15, 2012.

About our Featured Authors
Ralph Fletcher is a writer of children’s picture books, young-adult fiction, and poetry as well as an educational consultant who has also written books for both children and professional educators on the craft of writing. He will share with us his thoughts on writing of which one is; “Here’s the secret of writing: there is no secret.”
Fred Bowen writes the weekly Washington Post sports column for kids and is the author of nine sports novels for kids. Winners Take All was a finalist for six statewide children’s choice awards. He’s been a guest speaker at the Smithsonian, The Baseball Hall of Fame, and hundreds of schools across the county. He has a degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from George Washington University. He lives in Maryland with his wife and daughter.
Phil Bildner is a full-time writer and has carved out a niche in the children’s and young adult writers’ market. Some of his picture books include Shoeless Joe & Black Betsy, The Shot Heard ‘Round the World, Twenty One Elephants, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Turkey Bowl, The Hallelujah Flight, and The Unforgettable Season. He also writes novels for teens, including Playing the Field and Busted, and, with Loren Long, a series of New York Times bestselling middle grade chapter books, Sluggers! Phil also visits schools frequently, holds writers camps, and has founded a non-profit organization called The NOLA Tree.

About the One Day Workshops
The Northern Virginia Writing Project provides one-day writing workshops for interested students and motivated writers in grades 5-12 in the fall and 4-12 in the spring. Workshops are run by NVWP Teacher Consultants, some of the best teachers in Northern Virginia. Class size is small, with a ratio of twelve students to one Teacher Consultant. The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Students may choose the workshop topics which interest them the most. In addition, students in grades 10-12 may choose to take College Application Essay Writing, an intensive workshop designed to help them write truly effective college application essays.
Examples of topics offered: Art & Nature Writing, Visualization, Fantasy, Short Stories, Science Fiction Stories, Writing from Personal Experience, Theater Sports, Mystery Stories, Scriptwriting, Poetry, and Dialogue and Characterization.
Free For Parents
Parents are invited to attend a discussion on writing as a family. This discussion is free of charge and will take place from 11:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Paid Parents’ Workshop
In addition, we offer parents the opportunity to participate in a writing workshop. Topics of these workshops vary, see registration form for details.
